ABOUT For Colombian born artist Luisa Velasquez, there is no muse--but a desire to create aesthetic bridges that span the distance between man-made monuments and nature's forgotten, simple pleasures. Each piece is best viewed as a composition of layers: the painting, the mediums, the staining, the assemblage, and the curing. Each layer has its own definitive element that lends a unique characteristic to the finished product; it's never just paint, patina, or resin. The harmony between the layers--focusing on individual notes, or the group as a whole--defines the work as a true piece of mixed media art.
After studying at the Instituto de Diseno in Bogota, Luisa's passion for an international perspective led her to Washington D.C. where she began to map out her style under the influence of the masters within the Hirshhorne and her delegation of friends who found their new home in our capital--hailing from all corners, forming an American identity, becoming the pioneers of their own destiny.
Luisa now resides in Philadelphia, a quick step from the Italian Market and its open air selection of food and culture. With studio space in the North East portion of the city, Luisa's daily travels allow for a full spectrum experience of the changing landscape.
Luisa is in constant collaboration with the craftsmen and women of Philadelphia; taking solace in their unwavering ethic and desire to be purified and defined by their labor. Inspiration is shared, never taken. The same dirt that is embedded in the hands of the mechanic or the contractor is the same that is embedded in the artists: the sweat, energy, consideration, frustration, and fulfilling air of belonging to a shrinking tribe of American Masters.
Artist Statement
Each piece is a construction, it is not just a painting, or a sculpture, or a fresco, but it is the assemblage of all these. Just like a beautiful piece of architecture, the constructions take on new meanings at different angles. When facing the piece from afar, it has notable dimension and grace. At the tip of your nose, the arrangement is defined by its range of materials used; meticulously layered with uninhibited passion to match mediums with desired sentiment. As you pace around the composition, and your eyes catch the once missed edging, curves, elevations, and depth, it becomes clear that the abundance of light is crucial to extracting the full range of emotions desired. A huge challenge for viewers is not to touch the work. Each piece is cured to a glass-like finish that preserves the state of assemblage like ancient forms caught in amber.
